  • Region

    This beautiful province can be found in the heart of Italy, mid way between Toscany, Marche, Lazio and Abruzzo. Often referred to as the green heart of Italy, Umbria is rich in art and culture, offering a healthy mix of urban agriculture and architectural wow this province is enticing tourism from all over the world and intends on ensuring it stays that way.

    Umbria is host to various festivals including; The Festival of the Two Worlds, Umbria Jass, Festival of the Nations, Todi Festival and Chocolate Festival as well as offering facilities such as museums and spas.

  • Provinces

    Perugia

    Out of the two provinces, Perugia is the larger of the two, the capital of Umbria and was actually the only province in Umbria until 1927 when Terni was created in the southern region. This stunning province is the native soil of two famous painters; Perugino and Pinturicchio and is also very well known for its chocolate; Baci which consists of one hazelnut inside of chocolate that is wrapped inside a piece of paper with a love sentence on it which is very popular in Umbria's Chocolate Festival which is held in Octiber each year. Perugia also offers it visitors a fantatic array of historical artefacts such as The Fontana Maggiore which is an old medieval fountain or the The Rocca Paolina which is a renaissance fortress.

    Terni

    Terni is the smaller of the two provinces of Umbria, however this does not mean it offers any less of a tourist attraction. In fact, Terni was awarded "Manchester of Italy" after being part of the Industrial revolution in the later part of the 19th Century. A province very much giving a cotemporary and lively feel to with plenty of delights for the eye to see; the Roman amphitheater, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the small Roman gate of Porta Sant'Angelo which is one of four prehistoric entrances to the city.

  • Culture

    Umbria is the hometown of many famous artists to name a few: Pietro Vannucci, Raphael and Pinturicchio. Remnants of the Etruscan society can still be seen as well some remarkable Roman remains in Spoleto, Assisi and Gubbio much of which flourished at the early stages of the 12th Century. Certainly the Cathedrals in Spoleto and Assisi are not to be missed or why not take a trip to the National Gallery of Umbria home to a world famous painting by Duccio di Boninsegna.

    Umbria is steeped in history up until the present day offering its visitors an insight into the Roman conquest in 295 BC and the Byzantine era. The 17th Century seen a complete make-over for Umbria offering a much more medieval type of architecture.

  • Activities

    Umbria offers a wealth of facilities for its visitors as well as some superb food such as meat, olives, truffles and wild boar as well as fantastic local wines. A province offering a much more tranquil area Umbria gives you the chance to see the Roman amphitheater in Gubbio, Renaissance buildings and the chance to head further down south to Spoleto cast your eyes on the Roman theatre which is home to The Festival dei Due Mondi which held each year that offers culture from all over the world.

    For those of us who enjoy an active holiday Umbria offers vast amounts of hiking and trekking opportunities to take in the beautiful landscapes and scenery, this can be with or without a tour guide however, a tour guide will be able to give a much better insight into the history of this stunning city as well as take you to the most astonishing spots. Cycling is another extremely popular past time in Umbria with no end of diverse countryside to tackle whilst taking the time to enjoy a picnic in the basking sunshine or one of the local Gelateria's (ice cream parlour).

    Perugia gives visitors the chance to sample the local nightlife with an array of bars and clubs to visit offering a variety of music to cater for every taste bud.
    Assisi is the home of Basilica di San Francisco, which is a very famous world heritage site, which attracts thousands up thousands of visitors and history lovers each year partly due to it being the crypt of St. Francis himself.

  • Travel

    By plane:

    Umbria is an easy destination to fly to with Ryanair offering daily flights from London Stansted from as little as £14.99 depending of course on when you book, however there are plenty of bargains to be had.

    By train:

    This fantastic province also offers quick and easy rail access from Firenze-Terontola-Perugia-Fogligno-Terni or Firenze-Chiusi-Orvieto lines then on the Adriatic side from Andona-Foligno-Spoleto-Terni or Ancona-Foligno-Perugia lines.
