Trentino Alto Adige also referred to as Trento is one of the lesser published regions in Italy which was part of Austria-Hungary from 1815 until 1919 with its neighbours being Tyrol (Austria) in the north, Graubünden (Switzerland) in the north-west and the Italian regions of Lombardy and Veneto to in west and south.
A region that is largely hilly that offers a huge array of superb forested areas and dominates the Dolomites and the southern Alps. A diverse region; Trentino is fruitful and its main source of income is from wine, dairy, fruit, paper and metal production.
Apples and wine are well talked about in this beautiful region which has very much started to entice more and more visitors. Along with the produce Trentino is legendary for the superb ski resorts including Madonna di Campiglio which is the biggest of Italys ski resorts offering the most runs, beds and lifts.
This is quite a spectacular region and offers its active visitors a taste of its wonderful walks up winding hills surrounded by glittering waterfalls and breath taking views of the snow capped mountain ranges. The local people in Trentino are very hospitable and friendly, who are more than happy to offer you a sampling of their sumptuous meats or spaghettis washed down with a crisp glass of home made wine!

Bolzano-Bozen
Bolzano-Bozen is the capital of Alto Adige which can be found in the north-western area of the region which is made up of both German and Italian heritage. This province is home to the famous Dolomites Mountains which offers quite simply breath taking views, skiing and scenery!
Bolzano-Bozen offers a healthy mix of a typical Italian Piazza square coupled with beautiful restaurants, local nick nacks and of course superb local wines. Various locations in this province are named after many a famous artist such as Leonardo DaVinci.
This is a truly beautiful province with many offerings nestled round every corner catering for those who enjoy delving into past events and history or perhaps prefer a gallery, museum or of course the amazing ski runs on offer. A vast number of opportunities lie here and just one or two of the beautiful sites to feast your eyes on would be; Castel Roncolo, Chiesa dei Domenicani , Messner Mountain Museum Firmian , Museo Archeologico dell'Alto Adige, Piazza Walther or of course the Passeggiata del Guncina (promonade). Many of the regions wines are produced in this province which is now home to over 30 wineries giving you a wonderful array of white, red or rose wine.
Trentino
Trentino is stunning area that is mostly mountainous, with most of the locals living by the upper Adige River. A steady stream of tourists arrive year upon year to savour the wonders that lie here including the church of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Castello del Buonconsiglio which is a fortress once the home of the Prince-Bishops who took hold over the province and used the fortress as there domain to have a close eye on the town and its inhabitants.
The fortress is a mass of history giving those who visit it a true insight into days gone by. For those who prefer to simply relax during their trip, Trentino offers a wonderful Spa; Vitanova Spa which is famously known to all locals and has some superb beauty treatments, massages and therapy treatments to unwind with.
Along with its plethora of historical artefacts and spas this province is coupled with beautiful hiking and cycle trails as well as some marvellous ski resorts to sample for those who prefer the great outdoors. The Dolomites attracts worldwide musicians to its music festival that is held there each year, offering an abundance of sounds from every culture and country, something most certainly not to be missed. The main source of income here comes from agriculture and there are a vast array of cereals produced here along with fresh fruit and vegetables.
- Culture
This region offers a wonderful plethora of diverse and genuine original features from the Medieval, Gothic and Roman period. Roman and Paleochristian artifacts can be still be seen in the churches of S. Pietro in Bosco in Ala, of Tenno and of S. Romedio.
The most famous and well documented monuments is the Cathedral of S. Virgilio in Trento and the Basilica of S. Lorenzo. There is no shortage of castles and museums to tickle your taste-buds such as The castle of Buonconsiglio or the Natural Science Museum of Treno, the Diocesan museum of Trento and one of the most well known museums at Rovereto castle giving its visitors a very unique insight into the Great War.
The Romans took hold of Trentino Alto Adige after taking in the Rhaetian people which was then thrown out by the Goths and taken under command by the Bavarian people. The Counts of Tyrol rose in the middle ages then there was a short lived rule by Venice followed by a 400 year rule by the Austrian Empire. Trentino and Alto Adige were once separate regions under the Germans and were once home to some extreme fighting in World War 1, however after this period the Italians dominated and the regions became one with the local people preferring to stick to their German heritage.
- Activities
Trentino Alto Adige has an abundance of things to do and see so you will never be stuck for something to keep you entertained. For those who prefer the great outdoors, with the fresh Italian air swirling around your lungs there are plenty of stunning nature trails to take advantage of in the alpine valleys or why not try a spot of skiing.
Trentino is famous for its skiing facilities at the Dolomites which is home to over 650 miles of highly maintained runs, 464 lifts and around 40 separate features. The dolomites are a Mecca for skiing fanatics and the most extreme mountains in Europe giving experienced skiers a superb challenge when sliding down the various harder runs. Amongst, the wonderful portfolio of activities here visitors can sample mountaineering, free climbing, canyoning, ice curling, hand gliding, tobogganing, fishing and many more activities.
For those who prefer to reminisce over the ancient historic facts and goings on, a visit to the Earthen pyramids at Segonzano in the Val di Cembra is highly recommended or the numerous castles located in ; Castel, Beseno, Sabbionata, Drena, Stenico, Caldes, Thun, Pergine and Ivano. During your trip to this extraordinary region you must take part in some wine tasting offering you the opportunity to sip some beautiful wines including Pino Blanc, Pino Noir, Chardonnay and the Spumante Talento Trento and the local speciality; Grappa which is a well known and loved Liqueur. This is a region that has the perfect climate for all varieties of vegetation including chestnuts, asparagus, mushrooms and corn.
This province is of course famous for being home to the largest lake in Italy, breath taking and jaw dropping; Lake Garda attracts millions of people to the area. This is a Lake that is fantastically rich in vegetation, flowers and activities offering scuba diving, karting, tennis, sailing, windsurfing, hiking and many more. Amongst this wonderful array of natural beauty there is an abundance of wildlife here round every corner, along with wineries and a very fruitful variety of vegetables. Lake Garda offers visitors excellent value meaning your money will go that little bit further and has 3 and 4 star hotels on available during the trip should you wish to stop.
- Travel
Trentino as a relatively easy region to access, offering both flights and easy rail routes.
By Plane
Alitalia flies in-direct to Bolzano-Bozen via Rome or Milan Malpensa from London Stansted. Easyjet also offers routes from London Stansted to all Milan airports including Malpensa then you can simply hope on an internal flight to Bolzano-Bozen.
There are a variety of other local airports offering access to this region including; Verona Valerio Catullo Airport just 1hr 15 minutes away which is serviced by British Airways from London Gatwick and Ryanair services Verona Brescia from London Stansted with is just under 2 hours away. There are also a number of other airports such as; Innsbruck, Bergamo, Treviso and Venice airport that are easily reachable with 2 hours making this region albeit lesser know extremely easy to get to!
By Train
Munich, Innsbruck, Milan, Bergamo, Brescia, Verona, Treviso and Venice Airports are all well situated and accessed by rail seven days a week from Bolzano and Trento rail line.
