Friuli Venezia Giulia's offers a fairly flat terrain with its neighbours being Austria in the North, Slovenia in the East and the Adriatic Sea in the South. This is a region that has very much been left untouched so offers the tranquility of a quieter spot to take in the wonderful artifacts and historical remains. Albeit a lesser-recognized region its ports are very much in use both locally and internationally so there is foot traffic to the area. Friuli has a fantastic array of activities and is a Mecca for fishing offering you the chance to sit peacefully taking in the panoramic views whilst catching fish for supper to eat with the local dish of Polenta which a type of boiled corn. One of the biggest sources of income here is from is from the fantastic locally produced maize, sugar and wines.
- Provinces
Gorizia:
Gorizia is located at the confluence of the Isonzo and Vipava Valleys. Gorizia's main source of income comes from the service industry as well as the industrial, which has been very fruitful since the Second World War together with textiles, paper, furniture and food.
Gorizia's old paese town is located by the medieval castle some 148m up from the newer town which can be found by the station. The old paese town has tremendous views of the landscape. A wall separated Gorizia until 2004 so those living or visiting there could have one toe in Italy then the other in Slovenia!
This region originally belonged to Austria until 1918 during the First World War as it lay on one of the main roads. However, being in the frontline Gorizia was repeatedly attacked and much of it got destroyed. Today, some of the remains of the original town can still be seen. This province is something quite exquisite and offers a mix of Medieval, Baroque and 19th century architecture and artifacts. There are some wonderful sites on offer here such as the Archeological exhibit museum, Monte San Michele and Museo della Grande Guerra as well as offering it residents a taste of the Opera each year in September!
Pordenone:
Pordenone can be found in northeast Italy approximately 65km northeast for Venice. This province plays a crucial part in for Italy's economy as it provides most of the electrical goods for the consumer industry, which in turn, has been a key factor in the booming economic growth. The main part of this region is centered around the old paese town from this the more recent new suburbs and town has been developed.
Pordenone was home of the explorer Odorici Matiussi, as well as being the host of Le Giornate del Cinema Muto, a recognized and popular festival of silent filmuntil around 1999. A region with many sights for its visitors to see such as the Cathedral of St Mark, Rocco and an altarpiece by Renaissance artist Giovanni Antonio de' Sacchis who was also born there, a 79m bell tower and Castello di Torre from the late 12th Century which is now the location of the western Friuli Archaeological Museum.
Trieste:
Trieste can be found connecting Karst lands and the sea. Very much a border region, Trieste has the Adriatic Sea on one and severe Karst Peninsula on the other. This province was part of the Austria up until 1918 and is now a border town however, does host homes to a mixture of ethic backgrounds from German to Hungarian. Trieste hosts a number of beautiful palaces for visitors to view observe including the Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo della Prefuttura and Palazzo del Lloyd which all boast breathtaking architecture.
Amongst the other delights to sample are the city's two castles: Castello di San Giusto and Castello di Miramante as well as offering a plethora of churches to view such as cattedrale di San Giusto and the synagogue or Evangelic Church. The locals worship the sea or "Bagni" as they refer to it and spend hours there throughout the year. During your trip to Trieste it is recommended to savor the age-old coffee produced and served here, it is quite simply fabulous!
Udine:
Charming Udine can be found in the heart of Friuli-Venezia Giulia 71km northeast of Trieste connecting the Adriatic Sea and the Alps(Alpi Carniche), just under 40km from the Slovenian border. Udine is a stunning province it is seen as the succeeding city of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and locals think it will gain superiority soon. This is an area ripe for tourism offering galleries, magnificent churches and age-old buildings that are steeped in history.
Udine is a central location for rail and road connections that link Croatia and Austria offering a fruitful central location that has a booming economy in the steel, textiles and paper industries. Not just a green lush province that has some breathtaking scenery there are also an abundance of sites to be taken advantage of; the Palazza Patriarchale which was constructed in 1517, the Church of Santa Maria della Purita, the oldest church in Udine which is dedicated to St Mary of the Castle and not forgetting the Piazza della Liberta which is the central square offering some wonderful architecture. For those who enjoy the outdoors this is a city to tickle everyone's taste buds and has two main botanical gardens: Orto Botanico Friulano and Parco Botanico Friulano.
- Culture
Friuli has an wonderful varied history offering visitors a chance to Early Middle Age's art of Romanesque and Renaissance chic to the more contemporary style. Friuli was formerly known as the Julian region during the period when the Romans dominated here. It was separated when the Barbarians took hold of the city and the dukes of Friuli dominated the more rustic areas. It wasn't until the 11th Century that Roman Catholic patriarchate of Aquileia to control over the region.
In 1866 Udine become part of Italy then the remaining part of the region joined in 1918. The province of Udine was disconnected from Veneto and amalgamated with Gorizia province to form Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
- Activities
There is an abundance of things to see and do here including going to see the Revoltella Civic Museum, Civic Museum of the Sea, the Civic Museum of Art History holds an extraordinary assortment of archaeological remnants and in the Civic Museum of Pordenone you can valuable wooden artifacts.
Madonna is a visitor to the region, who is also playing in this years free festival and there are other events such as the wine festival and various opera performances, which prove highly popular drawing all the locals in. Friuli is a favoured region for sports competition such as the Italian Championship of mountain racing and will be hosting the 23rd Biking Festival this year.
Friuli is a Mecca for all the golf fanatics out there and has seven clubs in the region offering a range of course to cover every handicap. This region also offers a variety of water sports such as windsurfing, sailing and canoeing, for those who prefer to stay inland can take advantage of some rock climbing, grass skiing, tarzaning or eco climbing.

By Plane:
The regional Airport is located in Trieste some 33km from the city centre, 40km from Udine, 20km from Gorizia and 80km Pordenone.
Flights from the UK can be from most UK airports using Easyjet, Flybe, Ryanair or British Airways into Rome then you a short internal flights into Trieste.
By Train:
This region has direct rail access into all of provinces therefore those who flew into Rome could then hop on the train to the city of choice.
