  • Region

    Abruzzo can be found 100km east of Rome, with its neighbours being Marche in the north, Lazio in the west and southwest, Molise in the southeast, and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Abruzzo is a hilly rocky region offering plenty of long walks for the more active person or some wonderful cycle routes. This region offers a National Park that has a variety of wildlife including bears and wolves. Abruzzo has little over 129km of coastline with reaches from the Tronto to Trigno Rivers. A trip to this untouched region offers you a taste of the real Italy, somewhere so unspoiled by tourism or changed for an international market that it makes it an exquisite area with a plethora of local foods and wine to sample!

  • Provinces

    Chieti

    This province can be found nestled in central Italy approximately 200km northeast of Rome and lies beside the Pescara River on the Adriatic coast and has the breath taking Maiella and Gran Sasso mountains as a backdrop. It has a fairly hilly landscape with beautiful panoramic views as a benefit along with a covering of Olive trees and vineyards that are famously recognised worldwide and something not to be missed on a trip here - especially the extra virgin olive oil! This is a province to rival its neighbours and has many wonderful historical features on show for its visitors including the remains of the Gothic cathedral from 1069. The Church of San Francesco al Corso and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, the institute of Art, picture gallery and not forgetting the botanical gardens; Giardino Botanico Meichele Tenore are not to be missed.

    L'Aquila

    L'Aquila lies in central Italy and is the capital of Abruzzo. The Apennine Mountains and the Gran Sasso d'Italia to the northeast border it. This is a city very much in the hustle and bustle where it attracts students to the University of L'Aquila as well as travellers on a daily basis due to the wealth of commercial facilities and the abundance of things to do there including a surplus of Baroque architecture and churches. This busy city has no shortage of food delights to offer you and is a lively city that many bars, restaurants, a theatre and film institute! L'Aquila is much known and loved for its ski runs that cater for beginners to the more advanced enthusiasts giving them an array of cross country runs.

    Pescara

    Striking Pescara can be found be found on the Adriatic coast at the entrance of the Aterno-Pescara river. This province doesn't resemble that of a typical Italian city; rather more modern looking and offering a cotemporary chic feel to it. However, Pescara gives it visitors and holiday makers exactly what there looking for an assortment of beaches that are manned by lifeguards which is something quite rare in Italy therefore, ensuring a safe and happy bathing experience for children. Pescara has an assortment of different shops, restaurants and also has a superbly recent railway station. The core of the town's squares is Piazza Rinascita and Piazza Prima Maggio, which offer a collection of things to buy. Pescara does offer a snippet into its history with the Museo delle Genti d'Abruzzo, Cathderal of St Cetteus and the Gabriele D'Annunzio's house, which was the home to one of Italy's finest poets, and the area will also host the 2009 Mediterranean Games.

    Teramo

    Teramo can be found near the meeting of the Vezzola and Tordino rivers which is explains it being known in early times as 'Interamnia' meaning the between the rivers. It neighbours are Ascoli Piceno in the north, L'Aquila in the south, Lazio in the west and the Adriatic Sea is in the south. Teramo's main source of income comes from agriculture, commerce and various foods and ceramics. Teramo offers some beautiful historic sites such as the Cathderal of San Berardo, the church of Madonna delle Grazie, the remains of the Roman Amphitheatre or the gallery; Chiesa di S.Benedetto. Whilst taking in these wonderful sites why not sample some of the local Spaghetti alla Chitarra or Bocconotti (cookie).

  • Culture

    Pescara is a province that has an abundance of history round every corner especially of the ancient Roman civilization in Minternum. The most important example is Santa Maria di Collemaggio, in L'Aquila. Valuable Renaissance examples can be seen in Sulmona and L'Aquila. Abruzzo was known as Aprutium in the middle Ages and up until 1963 it was actually part of Molise.

    Romans dominated Abruzzo until 325 BC where there were many battles held over them trying to expand and ended in an Italic revolt of 90BC. In the 6th Century there was a Gothic War, the Lombards separated the region into Spoleto and Benevento. In the 12th Century the Normans rules mainly in Molise therefore Abruzzo was its own entity up until 1860. Bourbons ruled Naples until 1854 and did not admit defeat until 1861. In 1927, Pescara was founded and Molise was divided from Abruzzi establishing as a region in 1963.

  • Activities

    There is an abundance of things to see in this stunning region, offering a plethora of castles and churches as well as museums such the National Museum of Abruzzi, which has everything from Archaeology to ceramics. This diverse region offers something to tickle every taste bud, why not try skiing. Abruzzo has 22 different ski resorts to cater for every level of experience from beginner level to the more advanced level. There are five main national parks giving you an insight into the native wildlife here; Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo is the Main Park and Lago di Barrea, which is more of a wetlands. For those who prefer to quite simple sit back, relax and catch a golden tan during the day then go for a tipple or two in the evening, well there is no shortage of beaches in Abruzzo which hosts seven main resorts, the Francaville al Mare Beach hosts various nightclubs and bars open until late!

  • Travel

    Abruzzo's local airport is situated in Pescara and benefits from international flights with Ryanair from Stansted flying Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

    Alternatively, you could fly into Rome, Venice, Brindisi or Bari then you can take an internal flight to Pescara.

    By Plane

    Another option would be to fly into Rome or Pisa then you hope on a train to Pescara. There are major rail line including the Adriatic lines going through Ancona, Pescara and Termoli as well as Roma and Sulmona.
